Foto 8.9 is a desktop resin 3D Printer from FlashForge. It uses a 8.9" 4K LCD screen for masking, making the machine produce parts with impressive speeds. And the build volume of 192 x 120 x 200 mm provides a lot of room for parts of all sorts. Foto 8.9 has a stable Z axis and print cooling.
Foto 8.9 3D printer has a sleek design, and, upon the first glance, looks a lot like other machines of this type on the market. There you have your plastic cover and dual Z-axis, control screen on the bottom and VAT with FEP film. But looking closer, there are some nice touches and overall decent components that went into the printer.
For starters, Foto 8.9 is heavy and solid all the way around – the bottom of the machine is heavy, which makes it less prone to wobbling. Z-axis, including the handle for the build plate is solid metal with great thickness – which, again, means fewer disturbances during printing process.
The plastic cover on the machine is quiet thick and rigid, too. Though, a small downside is that FlashForge went with a really dark shade for that one, so the cover ended up not being see-through. This tiny detail makes it hard to monitor the printing process.
The build plate in Foto 8.9 is not sanded but it has a rough texture to it, which helps prints to adhere to the plate. A small heads up is that at the center of the plate you can find 4 screw holes, which will come out on a part if printed flat at the center. Another nice touch on the design here – handles, which make it easier to handle your print plate after the process.
Finally, tiny but pleasant design details on the VAT itself. It also has handles, which for the VAT of such a bigger size, is a great help. There are also a few screws that go below the VAT, which act like legs, when you handle it outside the print. This makes changing the resin simply more comfortable and secure for the FEP film.
Foto 8.9 runs on a matrix of LEDs, which performs solid across the whole printing area. For masking it uses a 4K screen, which is also a monochrome one. This change now becomes more common across manufacturers of resin printers as monochrome screens provide better light transfer. As a result, the machine prints with greater resolution and speeds.
