Über Mega Pro

Mega Pro is an FDM 3D Printer from Anycubic. This machine is a close brother of Mega S (improved i3 Mega). With a build volume of 210 x 210 x 205 mm and all good features included into Mega S, this machine is a decent affordable printer with a small twist. Mega Pro includes an interchangeable laser module, which allows using it not only as a 3D printer but a laser engraver, too.

Features:

  • Doubles as a laser engraver;
  • Easy assembly;
  • Print resume function;
  • Filament outage detection;
  • Ultrabase print plate;
  • 3.5” Colorful touchscreen;
  • Metal frame;
  • Improved Titan extruder;
  • Semi-auto leveling.

Visually and structurally Mega Pro is a lot like the S model, it features the same printing build volume as its brother, which you can check in more detail on the Mega S page. Here we’ll just quickly go through the advantages and flows of the Mega brothers.

Good sides of Mega Pro 3D printer

Mega Pro utilizes a full metal frame, which increases the structural stability. The printing bed is guided by two rails rather than one, which makes the Y-axis movement smoother and reduces vibrations on the sides of the platform. Electronics are enclosed in a metal case under the printing bed, and the overall cable management of the machine is fine.

For 3D printer, you will have Anycubic’s ultrabase plate, which is a textured glass plate that provides good adhesion and easy release to prints. The machine also has a power outage resume function and filament run-out sensor, which are pretty common but still handy functions to have. The printer uses a dual gear extruder for fewer filament feeding problems (which is different from Mega S, which has a titan-style one).

Mega Pro’s frame has a built-in filament rack and Z-axis leveling upon homing. Mainboard drivers, like in the S version, are removable. Another small change is the mainboard drivers mentioned on Anycubic’s site are the quieter ones. However, we’ll touch upon that a bit in the section below.

Leveling on Mega Pro is actually a semi-auto one. The machine comes with a sensor that you install onto the nozzle to help you tighten or loosen springs underneath the print bed accordingly. This method is a bit more time-consuming, however, such a model of the sensor is quite accurate in measuring the distance between the print head and the bed. It will require some testing and learning but once you get a hold of it, your bed leveling process will become smooth.

Flaws of Mega Pro 3D printer

The above-mentioned quieter drivers are really installed on Mega Pro. However, not all 5 drivers are of this newer better version – several of them are the same model used in Mega S. They are capable of doing their job well and reliable but hard to call silent or quiet ones. Quiet drivers are installed for the X and Y axis, which create most of the movement during printing, so Mega Pro is somewhat less noisy.

One of the details you should be on the lookout for is cooling – the fans that come with the printer may fail to provide a fast enough cooling to the print, especially on higher speeds, which results in artifacts.

How is Mega Pro as an Engraver?

Mega Pro comes with a 1.5W laser head with 450 nm wavelength, which can be installed instead of the extruder. Such 2-in-1 machines are handy in terms of taking space at the workshop and saving some money but usually lack in one department or the other.

The engraving area of Mega Pro is 220 x 140 mm – nothing special but enough for hobby use. It works with leather, paper and wood. The laser head sits on magnets sturdy enough to work safely while being easy to install. Mega Pro has a laser indication function, which you can execute to preview the area that will be engraved.

Overall, the laser head specs are enough for small in-home projects, though, the 3D printer part of Mega Pro is much more functional and versatile.
